The introductory module of this short course introduces foundational concepts of substance use disorders focusing on how various biopsychosocial factors interact and influence the recovery process. It explores who is affected by substance use, the diverse motivations behind substance use, and highlights how stigma can create significant barriers to recovery. This module also introduces the nutrition, exercise, and eating models and their basic role in both substance use and recovery. This introduction to the short course provides a framework for understanding these biopsychosocial complexities of substance use and set the stage for deeper exploration throughout the course.
