The Impact of Opioid and Stimulant Use on Rural Communities and Effective Treatment Approaches and Recovery Supports

Session 1: June 8th, 3:00-4:30pm PT (Part 1: A Focus on Opioids)

This webinar will provide an overview of the impact of opioid use on non-metropolitan rural communities. The session will begin with a description of the scope of opioid use with an emphasis on the prevalence in rural settings. The acute and chronic mental health and physical health consequences of opioid use will be reviewed, including the impact of stigma on the availability of evidence-based care. The presentation will then shift focus to a discussion on how to implement effective medical and behavioral treatment interventions and recovery supports for people who have an opioid use disorder, and strategies for overcoming barriers to accessing treatment in rural areas. Time will be made available for group discussion and Q&A.

Objectives:

  1. Identify three (3) specific patterns and trends in opioid use in rural communities.
  2. Recall at least three (3) acute and chronic physical and psychological effects of opioid use.
  3. Explain at least two (2) specific medical and two (2) behavioral treatment interventions that have been proven to be effective in treating people with an opioid use disorder.
