The Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) promotes the importance of implementing an effective crisis response system as it benefits not only individuals, but families and communities as well. This dynamic 5-week Enhanced Professional Learning (EPL) series is designed for professionals within healthcare and behavioral health care systems in rural areas.

Part 1 of this series will give an overview of the history of the opioid crisis in the US, discuss current drug trends, and give examples of strategies that communities have used to reduce fatal overdoses.

Part 2 will review the current literature on harm reduction, discuss factors that affect the suitability and effectiveness of different strategies, and show how to use motivational interviewing and the “SMART” acronym to help clients choose strategies to minimize potential risks.

This two-part webinar will address ethical decision-making in a rural context. The first session will include a review of ethical principles and the fundamental ethical standards of confidentiality and informed consent. The second will focus on multiple relationships and limits of competency. Throughout, the webinars will include application of decision-making principles through case studies and examples drawn from the presenter’s clinical and supervisory experience.
