Food, Mood & Substance Use Symposium Consultation Session

Participants who attended the ROTA-R Food, Mood, and Substance Use Symposium were invited to attend an online follow-up consultation. At this consultation session several speakers from the symposium were available to answer questions regarding: the role of trauma, physical health, emotional regulation, and healing play a significant role in treatment and recovery services, how stigma for people who use substances and/or are in treatment/recovery services creates barriers, utilizing motivational interviewing strategies to increase engagement, and how to address stigma and bias in drug poisoning in prevention.

Food, Mood & Substance Use Symposium

The Food, Mood, and Substance Use Symposium brought together nutrition and behavioral health professionals who practice in rural areas to provide services through SNAP-Education, Cooperative Extension, Prevention, Harm Reduction, Treatment and/or Recovery Support organizations. Leading experts from the fields of nutrition and behavioral health disciplines facilitated presentations and discussions to foster a greater understanding of how to address opioid/stimulant use in rural communities; understand how food, nutrition, trauma and stigma impact treatment and recovery; and how each discipline can work collaboratively to inform each other’s work in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the Pacific Jurisdictions.

Trauma Informed Approach (TIA) in Rural Behavioral Health Settings EPL Series

This 7-week online learning series will increase the skill level of behavioral health professionals working in rural areas to define and recognize trauma in individuals. Rural practitioners who are able to help participants manage their symptoms using a strength-based approach minimize the re-traumatization and provide supports that are trauma informed.
