Motivational interviewing (MI) is a conversational method to promote behavior change by focusing on a person’s ambivalence and intrinsic motivation. It has been extensively researched in diverse areas like substance use, diet, exercise, and medication adherence. One systematic review found that MI was significantly better than other approaches in three out of four studies, and outperformed traditional advice- giving methods 80% of the time. These findings suggest that MI can be a valuable tool not only for clinicians, but also for people who work in non-clinical roles, especially when their interactions may be brief and multi-focused. This webinar gives a general overview of MI tailored to non-clinicians, offering insights on how it works and how its strategies can be used to foster positive behavior change.
