Guiding Change: Motivational Interviewing for Non-Clinicians Webinar

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a conversational method to promote behavior change by focusing on a person’s ambivalence and intrinsic motivation. It has been extensively researched in diverse areas like substance use, diet, exercise, and medication adherence. One systematic review found that MI was significantly better than other approaches in three out of four studies, and outperformed traditional advice-giving methods 80% of the time. These findings suggest that MI can be a valuable tool not only for clinicians, but also for people who work in non-clinical roles, especially when their interactions may be brief and multi-focused. This webinar will give a general overview of MI tailored to non-clinicians, offering insights on how it works and how its strategies can be used to foster positive behavior change.

  1. Understand the core principles of motivational interviewing (MI) and how they promote change.
  2. Identify and apply key MI techniques, including open questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries, in non-clinical settings.
  3. Adapt MI strategies to effectively support people at different levels of readiness for change.
